Who We Are
Tenafly Nature Center is a non-profit, independent, member-supported nature preserve located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Since 1961, TNC has nurtured an appreciation for nature, been a leader in open-space preservation and in environmental education for our community and beyond.
As a Tenafly Nature Center volunteer, you become part of the solution, helping to protect our clean air, clean water, and preserve wildlife and the community. You can help us keep our mission of environmental education and land stewardship alive. In turn, you will work with our staff, gain valuable knowledge, partake in unique experiences and deepen your environmental awareness.
Who should apply?
- Adults, teens (14+), and groups (postings include age minimums if applicable)
- Those who can make a time commitment
- Independent people and team players
Want to help, but you’re under 14 years old? You can! You need to have a parent or adult work with you.
Tip- We encourage teen applicants to call and fill out applications themselves. This way they can learn about the nature center on their own and we can learn about them too.
Please note that no minor shall be permitted to work:
(1) during school hours;
(2) before 7 a.m.;
(3) after 7 p.m.; except that minors may work until 9 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day;
(4) for more than five consecutive hours without a half-hour break; and
(5) for more than 18 hours per week when school is in session
What We Do
Conservation
We steward nearly 400 acres of forest land and wetland in order to protect, improve, restore, and sustain it as wildlife habitat. We work to preserving and improve the quality of water resources (freshwater biomes) including riparian (streams and rivers) as well as ponds (including small seasonal vernal pools) and wetlands. We strive to maintain the highest biodiversity possible on our land.
Education
We teach the public to enjoy and understand the natural world. We offer public programs for families, adults, and children:
- Seasonal Programs
- After-School Programs
- School Vacation Day Camps
We also offer programs for groups:
- Schools
- Teacher Professional Development
- Scouts
- Birthday Parties
Recreation
-
We maintain over seven miles of hiking trails for pleasure and exercise.
-
We have many natural areas for birding & wildlife watching like Pfister's Pond.
-
Enjoy our seasonal StoryWalk®, an interactive outdoor exhibit that turns reading into an adventure. Read a nature-themed story while walking in the woods.
-
You can cross country ski and snow shoe when trails are covered by snow.
