Center for Food Action (CFA) works to prevent hunger and homelessness in northern New Jersey. Our Mahwah location operates under a Client Choice Market model, allowing guests to select food items that best meet their household needs.
Volunteers in this role support both pantry and warehouse operations. Responsibilities may include pantry restocking, organizing shelves, preparing food items for distribution, light warehouse organization, and assisting staff with daily site operations.
Volunteer Commitment (Required):
CFA is an ongoing volunteer program, and we ask volunteers to commit to one shift per week on the same day, at the same time, and at the same location on a consistent, recurring basis. We do not offer one-time-only individual volunteer opportunities, and all sites are closed on weekends.
Physical Requirements:
Volunteering may involve standing for extended periods, bending and reaching, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, and working in an active pantry or warehouse environment. Closed-toe shoes are required.
Additional Requirements:
Volunteers must be 16 years or older. Court-mandated volunteers are reviewed for eligibility. All volunteers must agree to our Waiver, Confidentiality Agreement, and Code of Conduct. CFA maintains a respectful, non-discriminatory, and safe volunteer environment in accordance with USDA civil rights regulations.
Next Steps:
As a next step, we ask that all prospective volunteers complete our full intake form through our system. You can access it here:

This form helps us with proper screening, site placement, and compliance requirements.
Once volunteer slots become available, we will reach out with next steps. We OFTEN will have a waiting list (except for community service vols and group day of service events)
Many thanks again for your interest in supporting our mission — we’re grateful for your desire to serve the community.
