Description

We need Volunteers for the 2025 Point In Time Homeless Count!

What is the PIT Count?

The Point-In-Time (PIT) Count is a one-day snapshot of homeless populations in our community that captures the number and characteristics of persons who are experiencing homelessness.

Why?

Knowing the number and nature of people who are homeless and understanding the trends can help our community better understand the scope of the issue, improve system efficiency, strategically plan for resources and promote effective interventions.

What is my role as a PIT Volunteer?

Volunteers are instrumental in Passaic County’s ability to carry out a successful count each year. Volunteers are asked to complete a required training, and then to execute the homeless count of unsheltered individuals on January 29, 2025. Volunteers will be assigned to teams of four members with each team having a designated team leader. Teams will go out in to the community and collect survey responses from willing unsheltered individuals.

Time Commitment as a PIT Volunteer:

Volunteers are required to attend one training session offered prior to the Homeless Count. On the day of the count, volunteers are asked to sign up for shifts lasting four hours during a time frame of their choosing (Shifts run from 12:00 AM – 4:00 AM; 4:00 AM – 8:00 AM; 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM; 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM; 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM; 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM). Volunteers can sign up for as many 4 hour shifts as they are able to help with.

Key Responsibilities of a PIT Volunteer:

  • Help Passaic County carry out the 2025 Point In Time Count:
    • Participate in 4 hour shifts during the day of the count.
    • Work with a team of four (supported by a team lead) to ensure your geographic area has been surveyed.
    • Interact with and survey people experiencing homelessness in a safe, respectful, and impactful way that upholds the belief that all persons should be treated with dignity.
    • Provide toiletry bags, sandwiches, gift cards, etc. to those who participate in the survey.
    • Refer individuals who inquire about additional services to Project Homeless Connect.
    • Communicate with the PIT Volunteer Coordinator about any additional “hotspots” or areas where there may be homeless individuals, but may not be on the surveying map.

All volunteers are required to attend one online training.
