Who We Are

Mission: To prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

The Red Cross was founded in 1863 by Henry Dunant, after witnessing the horrors of war. Moved by the lack of medical care for wounded soldiers, Dunant advocated for the establishment of neutral organizations dedicated to providing aid during times of conflict. His efforts led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the adoption of the First Geneva Convention in 1864, which established rules for the humane treatment of war victims. Over time, the Red Cross expanded its mission to include disaster relief, health services, and humanitarian aid worldwide, becoming one of the most recognized and impactful organizations in global history.

What We Do

The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope. We ensure our communities are ready and prepared for disasters, everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products, all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed, and in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.
