Who We Are
Mission: To promote responsible, sustainable development and works to remediate centuries of pollution and associated environmental damage.
Hackensack Riverkeeper is the independent, non-governmental advocate for the Hackensack River. Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper works to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River for the benefit of the people and wildlife that depend on it.
What We Do
From community forums to Capitol Hill, we give a voice to the natural resource we depend on for life and leisure. Our advocates work to educate our neighbors about critical ecosystems in the Hackensack River watershed and organize our community.
Getting involved means getting outside! Recreating and enjoying the river inspires us to be better stewards of our precious resource and encourages younger generations to do the same. We offer Eco-Cruises, Paddling the Hackensack, and River Cleanups.
