At Bergen Volunteers, we love helping passionate community members turn great ideas into meaningful volunteer opportunities. Recently, we had the pleasure of connecting a dedicated group of student volunteers with a local nonprofit to bring their vision to life.
Hayden Won, a Bergen County high school junior, started a student-led volunteer group with a simple but powerful mission: to brighten the lives of seniors by transforming ordinary spaces into festive celebrations. Hayden reached out to Bergen Volunteers looking for a nursing home that would welcome the project, offering to provide all of the decorations, materials, and activities.
Bergen Volunteers connected the group with Christian Health, where they hosted their first event. The evening was a huge success, with one volunteer describing it as an "unforgettable experience."
On June 25, five student volunteers transformed the nursing home's multipurpose room into a lively 1950s-themed karaoke lounge. Complete with themed decorations, music, and interactive activities, the event gave residents an afternoon filled with laughter, singing, and nostalgia. The students spent time engaging with residents, creating meaningful connections while celebrating together.
This project is a wonderful example of how young people can make a lasting impact through creativity, compassion, and service. By combining fun themes with personal interaction, Hayden and the volunteer team created more than just an event-they created lasting memories for the residents and for themselves.
