The Bergen County Division of Senior Services is holding an Inaugural Bergen County Elder Abuse Awareness Walk, on Saturday June 25th from 9AM-12PM at the Overpeck County Park Amphitheater in Ridgefield Park. (Rain date Sunday 6/26)
This event was planned in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which is on June 15th. It will bring people together with organizations from all over Bergen County in support of the dignity and safety of older adults in our communities. The goal is to help elevate the serious topic of elder abuse through education and overall awareness.
The event will start with a short program. The actual walk is a “short” walk just under 1-mile on a flat, paved walkway considered to be beginner level. Throughout the path we will have facts and statistics on the topic of elder abuse to educate and encourage discussions during the walk. The end of the route flows into our information area where organizations will have tables sharing their services and relevant information. Near this area light refreshments and music can also be enjoyed. The atmosphere will be fun and full of enthusiasm.
Approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some form of elder abuse. (physical, emotional / psychological, sexual, financial and neglect) These statistics are not only startling but underestimated as only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse is ever reported. Seniors are often targeted in scams and other types of financial exploitation and the pandemic has only increased the risk for all forms of abuse.
Everyone has a senior in their life, whether they are a family member, a friend, colleague or neighbor; it is up to all of us to look out for one another especially our most vulnerable population. Knowledge is not only empowering but can literally save a life!
