Handler Requirements

Interested applicants must submit an application online.

If selected, the next steps include a personal interview, comprehensive orientation, and background check.

The following are required in order to be accepted into the volunteer program:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Able to commit to at least three to four visits per month
  • Physician clearance (we can contact your physician on your behalf)
  • Proof of flu vaccination (during flu season)
    • Instructions for providing proof will be shared during the application process

Pet Requirements

  • Dog must be on a leash or in a stroller (dogs with missing or paralyzed limbs may use a doggie wheelchair)
  • Must be certified for pet therapy through a recognized program
    • Per our policy: Only dogs that pass the health, behavior, and skill screening process by an approved pet therapy program (e.g., East Coast Assistance Program, Delta Society, Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, etc.) are able to participate in the program
  • Calm and under the handler’s full control
  • Willingly approaches strangers for petting
  • Comfortable with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Between 1 and 10 years of age
  • Has lived with the owner for at least six (6) months
  • Confident in unfamiliar situations and environments
  • Neutral with other animals; able to ignore other leashed dogs in close proximity
  • Examined by a veterinarian within the past year and confirmed healthy
  • Negative fecal exam within the past year
  • Current rabies vaccination
  • Current distemper vaccination (or proof of protective titer results)
  • Minimum one-hour time commitment per visit
